Q: How can i find new door locks set for my 1997 Saturn Sc2?
I cant lock my saturns doors so i wanna change the door lock cylinders.

A: saturn dealership or find good ones from wrecking yard and have them rekeyed by a locksmith or he may be able to repair your current ones.

Q: Why does my 1997 Saturn SC2 miss under first acceleration, but is fine at regular to high speed?
Sometimes it has a rough idle, and always chugs when going up a hill. But when I hit the accelarator for speed it never misses. It runs great with all kinds of power at high speeds and during regular highway driving. I have replaced the wires and plugs are nearly new. The gas filter is quiet high ($21.00), so I want to be kind of sure before buying that.

A: A common problem on these particular vehicles especially if mileage is starting to accumulate is the throttle position sensor starts going bad. First signs of failure are intermittant rough idle and sometimes even dying out when first started before the engine warms up. You will notice during normal driving that when you first give it gas it will hesitate sometimes and others it will do fine. Eventually it will get to the point that when driving it will fall on its face when you accelerate and then just pick up and take off for no reason. Sometimes they get so bad they will not let you accelerate at all but just idle and then die when you touch the gas. This is just one possible cause. If it is bad you can unplug the sensor which is on top of the engine somewhere near the throttle body and it will run much smoother although you don't want to drive it for an extended period this way because it directly effects the computer and will cause lousy gas mileage. This is just for test purposes. Secondly, if that check don't help, how old is your tune-up? Wires and plugs will usually make it 100K if a good brand. Don't listen to the fancy ads on tv telling you to buy the splitfire and other gimmick plugs. Fact is that lots of the little aluminum heads can't take the heat they produce. I know that sounds crazy but the way the gasoline detonates in the cylinder makes a difference of where the heat dissapates to the whole cylinder or mostly hits one tiny part wide open. I have a friend who bought Bosch Platinum for his little euro-rod and the heads of the plugs came off in his cylinders on two of them causing him to have to dismantle the engine and work on it. This may be a fluke but it' s enough for me. I know from years of using them that A/C plugs are cheap, do a good job, and last at least 100K miles in most cases. For your wiring, open the hood at night in a dark spot and look at your engine while it's running. If you see blue arcing inside the wiring get new wires. They aren't necessarily good if they don't but they are for sure bad if they do. If your fuel filter and air filter haven't been changed in a while you need to do that anyway. With gas prices the way they are these days lots of vendors like to buy the cheap bulk that comes off the bottom of the tanks at a discount and guess where all the sediment is? In your tank now. You can visually look at your air filter and see if it needs replacing. Shake your pcv valve to see if it rattles. If it does it is ok. You will have bad blow-by if it is bad meaning when you take the oil cap off the engine with it running you will see steamy looking air blowing from the oil filler hole. Most likely one of these checks should put you on the way to recovery. If it doesn't find a GOOD mechanic who has experience with Saturn's. Most likely it is a common problem that someone else has already paid the mechanic to experiment on so you can learn from their problem and save yourself some $$$

Q: 1997 Saturn SC2 Keyless Remote Programming?
Does anyone know how to program a keyless entry remote for a 1997 Saturn SC2, it is a basic GM remote, which I purchased directly from Saturn themselves.

A: i would need an email address to send the info for this

Q: 1997 Saturn SC2 reverse problem?
I just bought a 1997 Saturn Sc2 with 120000 miles it. It is the dohc engine. Ok, when i put the car in reverse and let it sit there with the brake on the car is fine. But then when i put the car in reverse and drive for about 5 seconds but at around 15 mph... the car sounds like its misfiring or something but then when i let off the gas its fine. Anybody know what this is??

A: id say the reverse in the tranny has worn out. or its possible that the solenoid controlling the shifts has gone awry. to due a quick fix replace the filter and fluid if need be and then try a transmission additive like lucas or seafoam. overall cost is about 50 bucks. if this doesnt work than you may be paying much more.

Q: How do I change the fuel pump on a 1997 Saturn SC2?

A: The fuel pump is in the gas tank. You jack up the car, and remove the fuel tank and on top of the sending unit and fuel pump combination assembly that comes out the top of the tank. Fairly straightforward job but still a pain in the butt if full of gas. You can often siphon out most of the gas, but some cars are impossible to siphon out of easily.

Q: Where can I buy aftermarket fuel injectors and fuel rail for a 1997 Sc2 saturn coupe?

A: I doubt you'll find any. There's basically no purpose in a company making aftermarket parts for that car.

Q: 1997 sc2 saturn 5 speed is leaked red fluid any ideas on what its from?
Was racing, punched 3rd gear started smoking. Pulled over to find that red fluid was draining from what seemed to be botton of tranny. from what i understand 5 speed trannys dont use the red fluid only automatic. Could it be hydrolic pump for clutch? Please help!!! Any idea let me know, THANK YOU......

A: Most new 5 speeds use automatic tranny fluid. Your front seal or the hydraulic clutch is leaking.

Q: where is the fuel pump located on a 1997 saturn sc2?
is it in the tank or out

A: in the fuel tank. make sure you replace your fuel filter and test your fuel pressure guage before you spend a lot of money on a new pump.

Q: What is the setting for a timing chain for a 1997 Saturn Sc2?

A: Saturnfans.com is a great resource for that information. However, the link provided above is for the L-Series Saturn, which is based on an Opel. Try this link: http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/19/9b/cc/0900823d80199bcc/repairInfoPages.htm I'll see if I can find one on the Saturnfan's Forum for you as well. Here are some Torque Settings: http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44221&highlight=timing+chain Here are a few threads that may help you (as I'm not sure precisely what your question is): http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=99317&highlight=timing+chain http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=99245&highlight=timing+chain http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=99039&highlight=timing+chain Good luck to you.

Q: 1997 Saturn sc2 engine rattles intermitantly?
I just started hearing the moderately loud rattle, but what is puzzling me is that it seems to calm down on occassion, noticed while ideling. First thought it was just the power steering fluid low, it was not. Oil level fine. Water level fine, no overheating. No hesitation or miss. It is difficult to tell where it's from as the water pump and power steering and engine are all in the area of the noise. Also, it doesn't have a water pump whine that I'm familiar with.

A: If you've never changed your top engine mount (AKA Top Torque Axis Mount), that's probably what you need to do. Other things it could be (but are less likely) are timing chain or catalytic converter. If your car sounds like a Diesel Engine, probably it's the Timing Chain. (This condition happens due to poor preventative maintenance, in particular - maintaining oil levels) If it sounds like a hollow soda can, it may be your catalytic. Timing chain is unlikely if you have maintained your oil levels throughout the life of your car. If your car is over 100K miles and you haven't changed the Engine Mount or the Catalytic, it is probably either of those. Another thing you may want to try is to run your car without the Serpentine Drive belt for a short time just to rule out whether it is Engine Noise or non-Engine Noise. If the rattle persists while the drive belt is removed, it's probably Engine Noise (which includes the engine mount and catalytic). If the rattle does not persist, it's probably something else (e.g. belt tensioner, water pump, power steering pump, etc...) Good luck. P.S. Check the Saturn fan's Forum for more in-depth information.

Q: Can you turbo or supercharge a 1997 Saturn SC2?

A: sure...you can force air into any engine, if you have the money and know-how. I don't know of any direct bolt on kits for that car though, so more than likely you'll need to know someone and know a little about fabrication. As far as the nitrous goes...skip it. It's only meant for racing and lame movies.

Q: why does my 1997 Saturn SC2 Overheat?
My Saturn SC2 keeps on overheating. I think that the fan does not turn on when the car is idle and when it is going under 50. When it goes over 50 i think the air is strong enough or something inside makes it so it does not overheat. When my ac or heater is on the car also does not over heat. Only when its under 50, stopped, and idle. PLEASE HELP ME and TELL ME WHAT TO DO. Thank You

A: yeah check the fan, the wires to the fan, the relay that controls the fan, the fuse for the fan, basically everything that operates the fan and the fan itself. Be sure to also check to make sure there s enough coolant in it, that there are no coolant leaks and that your radiator fins are not all crushed. the air needs to flow thru the radiator to function

Q: How much oil does a 1997 sc2 saturn ac compressor hold?
got a new ac compressor just need to know how much oil is supposed to be in it if it were empty or if there happened to be a leak and i take out only ...let say 1 ounce how much would i have to put back in

A: In answer to your question. Your system uses 5.6 oz of pag 100. NOTE OF CAUTION: Replacing the compressor on a car is not the same as changing your water pump. The particles from your old compressor not only are floating around your a/c system they will be blocking your orifice tube also which means that the system must be flushed and the orifice tube and accumulator/drier needs to be changed. Without doing this - the warranty on the compressor is no good and will probably be destroyed in just a short while. Please take it to a professional. good luck

Q: Motor Mount on 1997 Saturn SC2?
Okay so basicly I'm a 17 yrold female who know NOTHING about cars except how to drive. We bought a 1997 Saturn SC2 exactly a year ago. At first the car vibarated when I came to a complete stop. (Mainly my mirrors and dashboard) My dad says I have a bad motor mount. But he said to keep driving it, not a big deal. So I have been the last year. Didnt really have problems until a few weeks ago. I came back out to start my car.. it starts really weak but eventually is fine, I put it in drive and it started jumping and making a clunking noise and acted as if It was going to die. I called my dad and had him drive it home. It didnt give him any problems. So I kept driving.. It did the same thing last week, so I drove him and my dad took it to the shop Saturday. They are telling him it will be $200-$600 to replace the motor mounts. Is that the problem.. and does that price sound right? Also.. when I park the car and get out, I kinda smell a burning smell sometimes?? Please give me info. Thanks. So we went and picked the car up today. Bill was $360, repairs were 1 transmission mount, a thermostat, and a sensor I believe, not exactly sure on the sensor part. My transmission mount apparently collapsoed and was turned on its side.. the thermostat went out and that caused my car to automatticaly run the RPM higher because it was thinking the motor was cold. Does all this sound right?

A: on the lower end of the price yes, thats a normal deal, but 600?! find another shop...saturns are known oil drinkers! check and add often. "Saturns don't die, people kill them! Check your D*** Oil!"

Q: Should I buy a 1997 Saturn SC2 with 172000 miles?
Very clean car, strong clutch, new brakes, loaded, no rust. They are asking 2000 and I dont have much to spend, looks like a solid car but the miles worry me. It is in my price range but should I bother? How much would you offer the seller? I should add that I do not have reliable transportation, currently have a 1992 Lumina beater and would like to upgrade to something I am not completely embarassed to drive. For thoes that say no, what would you reccommend for my price range of under 2000? I know I cant expect much.

A: Unless the car has a rebuilt engine and everything else is working, I would suggest this is a very risky investment. The reliability track record for the Saturns isn't very good. I would be hard pressed to pay $500 for a 10 year old Saturn with 50% more miles than the national average for used cars.
