Q: Can a 1998 Saturn SL2 pull a Uhaul trailer?
Does anyone have some advice on pulling a small 4x8 Uhaul trailer 800 miles with a 1998 Saturn SL2? I'm moving from Phoenix, AZ to Oakland CA, which is about a 12-13 hour drive. I'd like to do it all in one trip. I have two motorcycles I need to take with me. I think the car is rated to tow 1000 lbs. I'm the only passenger, but the car will be full of clothes and lighter stuff. Should I attempt this? If I decide to, then I'll certainly install a transmission cooler and I'll do the drive overnight to avoid higher temperatures and to minimize traffic congestion. 3-4 stops for gas, and the rest should be straight and level driving. The Uhaul trailer is already pretty heavy ~650 lbs, and the bikes together total about 700lbs. That exceeds the 1000lbs recommended, but so many others say they pull heavier trailers with no problems. It's a 1.8L engine, 4 cylinder at 99k miles. Will this kill my car, and should I just pull my car with a Uhaul truck? It's about $600 more to rent a truck..

A: I really suggest against towing that load with your Saturn. It's like asking a dog to pull a fully loaded horse cart. That car just was not designed to handle a job like what you're wanting. To answer your question: It could very well kill your car to try it. I know it's significantly more expensive, but rent the truck.

Q: 1998 Saturn SL2 Question for serious answerers only?
I have a 1998 Saturn SL2. It starts up normal, sounds normal, no noise at all while in idle or while driving on road. Problem is that when I stop at a stop sign, or slow down to turn somewhere (store, or whatever) my RPM's drop to below 100. It usually sits just slightly above 100 in idle. I've already replaced the battery, just had the oil changed last week, checked spark plugs, wiring, etc. But for some reason, it continues to do this. It's at the point that I hate knowing I have to drive it to work (25 minutes away) in case in breaks down and I'm stuck at work. Could it be as simple as a dirty fuel injector filter? Or is it my battery (which is only 6 months old and top of the line)? Again, there's no noise, car doesn't sound like it's laboring, just the RPMs drop way too low, almost to the point of conking out. More frustrating than anything and causing me concern since I need this car, especially as a single-mom with 2 kids. Serious answers only please!! More info: Not a bad guage, and yes my car idles at 100 rpms. I've owned it for 5 years now, therefore I think I know what is "normal" for my car and what isn't. I'm not here looking for people to tell me what I do not know, but what I can do to narrow down the problems so I can have it fixed. I would like to go into the garage with some sort of knowledge so I don't get screwed out of money which I've been paying out for nothing to the garages thus far. Please again, do not tell me I don't know my vehicle. Same with anyone else who's owned their car or truck, you know when something is wrong and when it isn't. I may not be a mechanic, but I'm not completely stupid either. Thanks to those who answer with some sort of knowledge rather than bad mouthing me about my car due to the fact that I'm female.

A: i own a repair shop, and it sounds like it may have a dirty gas filter on it,and also a air filter will cause one to loose rpm,s like that ,if you have noticed any hesitation in it ,,id have the fuel filter replaced on it,that's a cheap price to pay to get it repaired if it still does it after the filter is put on it,you may have to have it checked out,but i think a new filter should help it a lot,,good luck,i hope his help,s.

Q: is a 1998 saturn sl2 with 42000 miles on it for 4990 a good deal?
I am looking into purchasing a saturn sl2 for 4990 is that a good deal ? Has any one had any good experiences with this car?

A: My daughter has a 2001 Saturn SL2, with a little less than 60k miles on it. We bought it last year for $4300. Great little car, but I think the price you mentioned is too high. We got ours, which was 3 years newer for almost $700 less, a little over a year ago. To get a fair price: Look on kbb.com and get the blue book price & go from there. As far as the car itself, she has had no problems with it other than the AC going out. Car runs great, gets good gas mileage. She loves it

Q: How much would the labor be to put a belt on a 1998 saturn SL2?

A: Depends on the shop labor rate. It calls for a half hour... For the serpentine belt. Some shops charge a minimum shop rate also. It shouldn't be more than $45 for labor. If you have them install their belt... probably about $40 to $50 more for the part. You are also likely to get a warranty if they use their belt rather than supplying your own. The shop will also check the pulleys and tensioner if the belt came off for no apparent reason. Usually one of those have gone bad.

Q: Would it be worth trading in a 1998 Saturn SL2 with a busted windshield, no bumper, 177,000 miles?
Also power windows in back do not work and the interior is pretty beat up or just salvage it?

A: if you go the kelley blue book website you can find out about how much your car is worth...they rate it for you and tell you how much you'd get as a trade-in, or selling yourself--factoring in the condition you say it's in. It helped me because my old cavalier was worth basically nothing, more to keep then to trade it, so I gave it away instead of getting 300 dollars for it. But in my opinion your car is probably worth more to a salvage yard then as a trade-in.

Q: How do I change a Low beam Head Lamp on a 1998 Saturn SL2?

A: pop the hood go in the back of the headlight and you will see the piece that twists and pulls out, the one with wire going to it.

Q: why does a 1998 saturn sl2 not shift in reverse properly after it has run for a while?
I have to tap the accelerator to bring the rpm to about 1000 and it will slip into gear

A: the input/output shaft nut on trans shaft has backed out causing trans to bang into gear in reverse it also affects 2nd gear if you let it go to long it can damage the valve body of trans if it hasnt already . take it to your local saturn dealer . common issue on those trans if it is just the nut it shoud be about a 4to 5 hr job they need to remove the end cover of trans to get to it . you probably are going to start getting a check engine light on if it is not on already . automatic trans right sl2 are all automatic trans

Q: Saturn SL2 1998 - broken cruise control?
So, I was driving along doing about 40MPH when I went to go turn on my cruise control and it just doesn't register anything. I tried holding the cruise to see if that did anything and it still wasn't working. Five minutes before this happened, it was working fine. Its a 1998 Saturn SL2 with 128K miles on it. Any ideas as to cost to fix this? Or possible problems that could cause this to happen. As to how fast my car to has to going for it to cruise: at least 25MPH. I've cruised no problem at low speeds before.

A: It could be a number of things, none of which can be diagnosed over the internet. I would get the car to a reputable repair facility Monday and have a professional check it out for you.

Q: 1998 Saturn SL2, Alot of Vibration felt threw body of car during idle whats wrong?
1998 Saturn SL2, 1.9 Twin Cam Car shakes alot at idle, driving down highway no shaking. What is wrong? Any common problems with these cars? Possible motor mounts? if so how do you check them? Vehicle runs ok, just replaced fuel filter and spark plugs, car over heated a year ago, vehicle has new cylinder head and Radiator. Shakes and trembles when idling at 1200 Rpms, when starting cold, When idling at 888 Rpms the desired idle speed for this car it does not shake.

A: This means that it's idling either too lean or too rich when cold - either way, it's causing a mis-fire. Once you're on the throttle (ie, not idling) it smooths out, because you're no longer using the cold idle system (aka choke.) Good luck!

Q: Auto repair for a 1998 Saturn SL2?
How do you change the oxygen sensor in a 1998 Saturn SL 2.

A: You unplug the electrical connector, remove the sensor with a crescent wrench, and install the new sensor. It takes 30 seconds. However, changing your O2 sensor is about 2% likely to make your code go away. Odds are the O2 sensor is reading funny because the engine's mixture is funny. In other words, if you are trying to keep an O2 sensor code from lighting the "check engine" light, don't expect a new O2 sensor to do the trick. Your car could have one of hundreds of other problems, from a blown head gaseket to clogged fuel injector, to bad throttle position sensor, to stuck EGR valve, etc. If you post the code (specifically whether it's rich or lean) we can provide a more specific diagnosis.

Q: Saturn 1998 clicks when trying to start from time to time?
I have a 1998 Saturn SL2. For the last 4 weeks....about 4x a week, I go to start the car and it just clicks...I keep trying over and over...then about 5 minutes passes, and it starts right up...No problem...Doesnt hesitate on starting. Doesnt sound different. Im nervous im going to get stranded somewhere...Is there anything that I can Check for???

A: before spending more on a starter and poss, wasting the time to remove it check the battery cables.Corrosion could cause the problem. If they have a white/green pwdery substace on them, clean them and apply protectant. If probley still exist then check the starter. Most auto parts stores will test your starter free of charge.
